Apprenticeship Overview
The SHE Technician supports organisations of any size or industry, working from office and site—sometimes across multiple contracts—to advise on health, safety and environmental (SHE) requirements. They help implement legal and company SHE obligations, develop and review safe systems of work, deliver training (toolbox talks, inductions), investigate incidents, analyse data, and report to management. By engaging across the organisation, they promote a safety culture that protects people and the environment, inspiring others to work responsibly and integrate SHE into operational decisions.
Whilst any entry requirements will be a matter for individual employers, typically an apprentice might be expected to have achieved or be working towards 5 GCSE’s A*- C including English and Maths as well as having knowledge to level 1 equivalent for commonly used office computer applications.

Developing Core Knowledge
- Understand legal and moral reasons for safe, healthy and environmentally responsible work, and know relevant legislation and guidance (e.g., Health & Safety, Environmental Protection).
- Know how SHE management systems and standards (e.g., ISO 45001, ISO 14001) work and how they apply in your workplace.
- Identify, assess and control hazards using systematic methods (risk assessment steps), prioritising activities with greatest potential for harm.
- Plan for emergencies and incident prevention, understand incident causation models (e.g., Swiss Cheese, Domino), and assess business risks like fines or reputational loss.
- Use behavioural safety principles to influence decisions and manage change, and prepare business cases (cost–benefit) to secure managerial support.
Developing Core Skills
- Deliver SHE briefings and presentations that engage the audience, handle challenges, use appropriate language, and reflect on personal performance.
- Support development and upkeep of the SHE management system by updating procedures, delivering training, coaching teams, and carrying out workplace inspections.
- Advise on practical application of SHE policies, identify and assess job-specific hazards, prioritise highest risks, and ensure controls follow legal and workplace instructions.
- Assist with SHE monitoring, inspections, incident investigations, performance reporting and maintaining compliant records for regulators and authorised users.
- Liaise with external specialists and internal departments, research regulatory updates and best practice, and support cost-aware decisions and budget considerations.
Developing Core Behaviours

- Work collaboratively and lead by example, adapting to change, resolving conflicts, and promoting a positive SHE culture while challenging unsafe behaviour.
