Staying Safe This Christmas – Part 1

Christmas Shopping – Your guide to safety…

The Christmas tree is up, Slade is playing on the radio and the rush to get the shopping done in time is in full swing. It’s a very exciting and fast-paced time of year but this means it can become a vulnerable time of year too.

The Suzy Lamplugh Trust aims to raise awareness of the importance of personal safety and to help people avoid violence and aggression to live safer and more confident lives. The trust provides safety tips and information, and as part of B-Skill’s December Safeguarding campaign, we’d like to share with you some ways you can stay safe and avoid becoming a victim of crime.

🎁 Try to avoid taking young children into busy shopping areas. We know this isn’t always possible, so if you do make sure they know what to do if they lose you… Let them know what the help counters look like, who the people that can help are and to NEVER leave the shop without you.

🎁 Agree a meeting point with your family in case you get separated.

🎁 Be mindful of where you park your car – Try to avoid dark and isolated carparks if you will be returning at dark. If you park in a multi-storey, choose a well-lit space as close to the exit as  possible and away from pillars. It is safer to reverse into the space for an easy exit.

🎁 Keep car doors locked when stuck in traffic in busy areas, particularly if you have shopping bags in sight. Always leave shopping bags in the boot and make sure your car is locked when leaving it unattended. Thieves are often opportunists who will take their chance on both occasions.

🎁 Pickpockets and thieves are likely to be operating more at this time of year. Be alert in your surroundings. Keep your handbag close and avoid having your phone in back pockets… Especially if your hands are occupied carrying shopping bags.

🎁 Try not to keep your valuables all in one place and be mindful to check you still have everything you left the house with.
